Eye Tests

At Charles Ledsham Opticians in North London, we advise that regular eyesight tests are a vital part of any health care program.

Eyesight tests are essential to ensure normal visual development in children and for the early detection of conditions affecting the eyes and general health. Every patient is given a very thorough eyesight test, including scans of the eyes and retinal photographs, as necessary, which takes at least half an hour. Further appointments may be required for additional scans or specialist examinations.

More Information

Every new patient is given a full eye examination which takes approximately half an hour. The spectacle prescription is ascertained by different objective and subjective methods and the eyes are examined externally and internally for conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and retinal detachments. Retinal photographs and OCT scans are stored for comparison on future visits. The effects of conditions such as diabetes and raised blood pressure can be detected and monitored with our imaging systems.  Additional tests for binocular vision, intra-ocular pressures, visual field analysis and colour vision are performed when necessary.

Specialist assessments are performed on young children to ascertain their quality of vision and spectacle prescription. More detailed examinations are available for children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia or those requiring contact lenses or myopia control.

Complex spectacle prescriptions due to extremely high myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, or pathology, require extra care and attention. We allow plenty of time for complex prescribing to ensure we find the best possible visual correction for your eyes.

At Charles Ledsham eye clinic in North London we have optometrists who specialise in fitting complex contact lenses. Contact lenses can offer considerable advantages over spectacles providing a larger field of view with reduced magnification or minification.

We use a variety of ophthalmic imaging techniques to screen and monitor different structures within the eye and visual system. These include optical coherence tomography, slit lamp photography, retinal fundus photography and visual field analysis.

The dyslexia eye examination includes a full optometric examination followed by further specialist tests to assess visual problems associated with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. This involves careful assessments of binocular eye movements and convergence.
